William of Hatfield was the second son and fourth child of Edward III, King of England, and Queen Philippa of Hainault. His birth took place in Hatfield, Yorkshire, during his parents' stay at the manor for the Christmas season of 1336. Despite being a royal offspring, William's life was brief, and he passed away at the age of five months. An effigy of William is located in York Minster.
