William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, was born in Normandy around the spring of 1190. He was the eldest son of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, and Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke and Striguil. During his youth, he was taken hostage by King John and lived at the royal court as a guarantor of his father's loyalty.
William became a key figure in the First Barons' War and fought at the Battle of Lincoln in 1217 alongside his father. He commissioned the biography L'Histoire de Guillaume le Mareschal to honor his father's achievements. His marriage to Alice de Bethune in 1214 allowed him to expand his influence and build a retinue of knights.
William died on 6 April 1231 and was buried on 15 April in the Temple Church in London. His titles were inherited by his younger brother, Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke.
