William Longsword, born around 893, was the second ruler of Normandy, succeeding his father Rollo in 927. He was known as the Count of Rouen and was sometimes referred to as a duke, although this title was not commonly used until later. William was born to Rollo and Poppa of Bayeux, and he was baptized a Christian, likely alongside his father in 912.
During his reign, William faced a rebellion in 933 led by Riouf of Evreux, which he successfully quelled, solidifying his authority. He expanded his influence by recognizing King Raoul and receiving lordship over Breton lands, although this led to conflict with the Bretons. William married Luitgarde of Vermandois in 935, gaining additional lands through her dowry, and he arranged a marriage for his sister Adela to strengthen alliances.
William Longsword was assassinated on 17 December 942 at Picquigny, ambushed by followers of Arnulf during a peace conference. He was buried at Rouen Cathedral. His son Richard succeeded him as the ruler of Normandy.
