William I, Count of Boulogne

William I was born around 1137 and became Count of Boulogne and Earl of Surrey jure uxoris from 1153 until his death. He was the second son of Stephen, King of England, and Matilda I, Countess of Boulogne. In 1148, William married Isabel de Warenne, 4th Countess of Surrey.

In 1153, following an agreement that excluded his elder brother Eustace IV from succession to the English throne, William inherited lands that were originally intended for both him and his brother. This occurred after his father, Stephen, signed the Treaty of Wallingford to end a period of civil war known as the Anarchy. William died on 11 October 1159 near Toulouse, France, and was buried at the Poitevin abbey of Montmorel.
