Walter Manny, originating from Masny in Hainault, was a celebrated soldier of fortune and the founder of the Charterhouse. He claimed descent from the counts of Hainault and was known for his close ties to the English monarchy, particularly through his service to William I, Count of Hainault, and his attendance on Edward III’s queen, Philippa of Hainault. His military prowess was notable in the Scottish wars and continental campaigns under Edward III, including his role in capturing the pirate John Crabbe and his commendable leadership at the Battle of Sluys and the defense of Brest during the Breton War of Succession. Manny’s philanthropic legacy includes his contribution to the foundation of the Charterhouse in London, a monastery built as a place of prayer for souls lost to the Black Death.
Death: Died at the age of about 62 in Great Chesterford, Essex, and was buried at the Charterhouse in London.
