Ulf, sometimes referred to as Wulf, was active from 1067 to 1087 and identified as a son of Harold Godwinson, the King of England. He was captured during the Norman conquest of England and subsequently held as a prisoner in Normandy. Ulf was only released following the death of William the Conqueror. His paternal lineage was prominent in Anglo-Saxon England, with his grandfather being Godwin, Earl of Wessex, and his father, Harold Godwinson, inheriting the same title before being crowned king in 1066.
While Ulf’s exact date of birth is unclear, it is generally believed that his mother was Edith Swan-neck, Harold Godwinson’s first wife. However, some historical debate persists over whether Ealdgyth, Harold’s second wife, could be his mother. During his imprisonment, Ulf learned the skills of a mounted warrior. After his release, he was knighted by Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, though his subsequent life remains unrecorded.
