Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk

Thomas of Brotherton, born in Yorkshire, was the fifth son of King Edward I and Margaret of France. He was named after the saint Thomas Becket and his place of birth. Thomas became heir presumptive to the English throne following his father’s death and before the birth of his nephew, Edward III. His titles included Earl of Norfolk and Earl Marshal, a position from which he wielded considerable influence, including commanding troops at the Battle of Halidon Hill. Thomas married twice, first to Alice de Hales and then to Mary de Brewes, and had a son and two daughters with Alice.
