Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk

Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk, was an English nobleman, soldier, and statesman who served under four monarchs. Born in Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, in 1443, he was the eldest son of John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, and his first wife, Katherine Moleyns. Howard’s early life included education at Thetford Grammar School and service as a henchman to King Edward IV. His military career was marked by participation in significant battles, including Barnet in 1471, where he was severely wounded, and Flodden in 1513, where he led the English to victory over the Scots. Howard’s political career was equally distinguished, holding positions such as Lord High Treasurer and Earl Marshal. He was a member of the Privy Council and was knighted by Edward IV. Despite initial attaintment under Henry VII, Howard regained favor and was created the 2nd Duke of Norfolk in 1514. His final years saw continued service to the crown in various diplomatic and military roles.
