Sybilla of Normandy

Sybilla of Normandy, born around 1092 in Domfront, Normandy, was the Queen of Scotland through her marriage to Alexander I. She was the first child of Henry I of England and his mistress, Lady Sybilla Corbet of Alcester, and was a member of the Norman dynasty through her father and the Corbet family through her mother.

Sybilla’s marriage to Alexander I, which occurred around 1107, was notable for its childlessness. Despite criticism from some historical accounts, evidence suggests that she and Alexander shared a devoted relationship. Her piety was also remarked upon. Sybilla’s death in July 1122 at Eilean nam Ban (Kenmore on Loch Tay) led to her burial at Dunfermline Abbey, and Alexander’s dedication to her memory was demonstrated through his plans for an Augustinian Priory and possible steps towards her veneration.
