Swein Forkbeard was King of Denmark from 986, King of England for a brief period in December 1013, and King of Norway from 999 or 1000 until his death in 1014. He was the son of Harald Bluetooth and a woman named Gunhild. In the mid-980s, Swein revolted against his father, seized the throne, and Harald was subsequently driven into exile and died shortly thereafter.
In 1000, Swein, with the support of Eric, Earl of Lade, managed to rule most of Norway. He married the widow of Erik, king of Sweden, who is sometimes referred to as Gunhild or an unnamed sister of Boleslaus, ruler of Poland. Swein was a father to several children, including King Harald II of Denmark, King Cnut the Great, and Queen Estrid Svendsdatter.
Swein Forkbeard died on 3 February 1014 in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. He was buried in either Roskilde Cathedral or Lund Cathedral. Following his death, his son Harald II succeeded him as King of Denmark.
