Svein Knutsson was the son of Cnut the Great and Ælfgifu of Northampton. In 1030, after the death of Håkon Eiriksson, Svein and his mother were sent to Norway to rule as regents. Their governance was unpopular due to the imposition of new taxes and strict laws, leading to their expulsion in 1034.
During his time in Norway, Svein faced opposition from local nobles who were dissatisfied with Danish rule. In 1033, he successfully defended his position against Tryggve the Pretender at the Battle of Soknasund. Support for Magnus, the son of Olaf Haraldsson, grew among the Norwegians, leading to Svein's departure.
Svein Knutsson died in 1035 at the age of 18 or 19 after fleeing to Denmark. His departure marked the end of Danish claims to the Norwegian throne, with Magnus I succeeding him.
