Sir John Fogge

Sir John Fogge was an English courtier and soldier, born around 1417. He became an esquire to Henry VI by 1450 and was involved in the suppression of Jack Cade’s rebellion. He served as Sheriff of Kent and was appointed Comptroller of the Household under Henry VI. Knighted in 1461, Fogge switched allegiance to the Yorkists and was rewarded with land and titles, including Treasurer of the Household to Edward IV. He served multiple terms as Knight of the Shire for Kent and MP for Canterbury. Despite initial support for Richard III, Fogge opposed him during the Buckingham’s rebellion, was attainted but later pardoned. He supported Henry Tudor and played little part in national affairs towards the end of his life. He built and endowed the church at Ashford, Kent, where he was buried.
