Sir Edward Howard was an English naval officer renowned for his role as an admiral. Born to Thomas Howard, later 2nd Duke of Norfolk, and Elizabeth Tilney, he had a notable military career beginning at the siege of Sluys at the age of fifteen. Knighted in 1497, Howard was involved in several significant naval battles, including the Battle of Saint-Mathieu. Appointed as the King’s standard-bearer and later as Lord Admiral, he demonstrated his naval prowess by capturing over 60 vessels and controlling the English Channel. His naval career, however, culminated in his death during an assault on French galleys near Brest, where he drowned weighed down by his armor.
