Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March

Roger de Mortimer, 4th Earl of March and 6th Earl of Ulster, was an English nobleman with a significant claim to the English throne as the heir presumptive to King Richard II, being the monarch’s first cousin once removed through his mother. Upon the death of his father, the 3rd Earl of March, in 1381, Roger inherited the titles at the age of six. His wardship and marriage were controlled by Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent, who arranged Roger’s marriage to his daughter Alianore.

Roger Mortimer spent considerable periods in Ireland, where he held the position of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland multiple times. His tenure was marked by his active involvement in the administration and military affairs of the region. Mortimer’s life came to an end during a battle at Kellistown, County Carlow, and his titles were subsequently passed on to his son, Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl of March.
