Robert Neville was an English prelate who occupied the positions of Bishop of Salisbury and later Bishop of Durham. His early life was marked by his birth at Raby Castle to a prominent family, being the son of Ralph Neville and Joan Beaufort, the daughter of John of Gaunt. This lineage placed him within the upper echelons of the English aristocracy.
His ecclesiastical career commenced with his nomination to the Bishopric of Salisbury on 9 July 1427 and his consecration later that year on 26 October. Neville’s influence and position within the church were further elevated when he was translated to the Bishopric of Durham on 27 January 1438. His tenure in these high offices spanned over two decades until his death in 1457.
