Robert, Archbishop of Rouen

Robert II, before becoming Archbishop of Rouen and Count of Évreux, was born to Richard I, Duke of Normandy, and his second wife, Gunnor. His appointment to the archbishopric by his father around 989–990 coincided with his acquisition of the countship of Évreux. Robert’s involvement in Norman politics was significant, serving as a steadfast supporter of the Norman dukes, which included his father Richard I, his brother Richard II, and his nephews Richard III and Robert I. His ecclesiastical and political influence made him a central figure in the governance of Normandy.

After being besieged and exiled by his nephew Duke Robert I, Archbishop Robert retaliated by excommunicating the Duke and placing Normandy under interdict. However, reconciliation followed, and the Archbishop’s titles and properties were restored. He played a key role in negotiating peace between Duke Robert I and Alan III, Duke of Brittany. Towards the end of his life, he focused on charitable acts and initiated the reconstruction of the cathedral church at Rouen. As regent, he protected and governed Normandy for William the Conqueror until his death in 1037.
