Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York

Richard of Shrewsbury, born in Shrewsbury, was the sixth child and second son of King Edward IV of England and Elizabeth Woodville. He was created Duke of York in May 1474, Knight of the Garter in 1475, Earl of Nottingham in 1476, and Duke of Norfolk and Earl Warenne in 1477. At the age of 4, he married Anne de Mowbray, 8th Countess of Norfolk. Following the death of his father, King Edward IV, in April 1483, Richard’s older brother became King Edward V, and Richard was the heir presumptive. The two brothers were lodged in the Tower of London and disappeared after the summer of 1483. The mystery of their fate has led to various theories and has been depicted in works such as Thomas More’s account and Shakespeare’s play Richard III.
