Richard of Conisburgh, 3rd Earl of Cambridge

Richard of Conisbrough, 3rd Earl of Cambridge, was born on 20 July 1385 at Conisbrough Castle, Yorkshire, as the second son of Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York, and Isabella of Castile. He faced execution due to his involvement in the Southampton Plot against King Henry V and was the progenitor of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, as well as the grandfather to King Edward IV and King Richard III.

His early life was marked by a lack of recognition from his father and brother, with no lands or mentions in their wills, suggesting a possible illegitimacy. Despite this, Richard was provided annuities by King Richard II, who was his godfather. He had a minimal military career and later married Anne de Mortimer and Maud Clifford, which brought him no significant financial gains. His role in the Southampton Plot led to his execution, but his title and legacy were restored by his grandson, King Edward IV.
