Richard III was the eldest son of Richard II of Normandy and Judith of Brittany. He succeeded his father as Duke of Normandy in August 1026. During his brief reign, he faced a revolt from his brother, which he quelled by capturing and then releasing him on an oath of fealty.

Richard III married Adela of noble lineage in January 1027, but the marriage was childless. He died suddenly in Rouen shortly after returning from a military campaign. His death led to the duchy passing to his younger brother, Robert I.
