Richard was an English prince born on 5 January 1209 at Winchester Castle, Hampshire, England. He was the second son of John, King of England, and Isabella, Countess of Angoulême. Richard became the nominal Count of Poitou in 1225 and held the title of Earl of Cornwall from the same year. He was one of the wealthiest men in Europe and participated in the Barons' Crusade, where he successfully negotiated the release of prisoners and contributed to the construction of the citadel in Ascalon.

Richard died on 2 April 1272 at the age of 63 at Berkhamsted Castle, Hertfordshire, England, and was buried at Hailes Abbey, Gloucestershire. He was succeeded by Rudolf I of Habsburg as King of the Romans.
