Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

Louise Dorothea Pauline Charlotte Fredericka Auguste, known as Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, was born on 21 December 1800 in Gotha, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Holy Roman Empire. She was the only daughter of Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, and his first wife Louise Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Louise married Ernst III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, later Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, on 31 July 1817. They had two sons, Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Albert, Prince Consort of the United Kingdom. The marriage was troubled, and they officially divorced on 31 March 1826. She then married Alexander von Hanstein, Count of Pölzig and Beiersdorf, on 18 October 1826. Louise died of cancer on 30 August 1831 in Paris, France, and was buried in the ducal family mausoleum at Friedhof am Glockenberg, Coburg.
