Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, was the fourth son and fifth child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He embarked on a military career, starting his training in the Electorate of Hanover in 1785. Edward served as a colonel of the 7th Regiment of Foot and was later promoted to major-general. He played a significant role in the West Indies campaign and was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, contributing to its military and civic institutions. Edward married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1818, and they had one child, Victoria, who later became Queen of the United Kingdom.

His time in North America was marked by his efforts to integrate French and English settlers, and he is remembered for coining the term ‘Canadian’ to describe both groups. Edward was also appointed Governor of Gibraltar, although he never resided there, and was eventually named Field Marshal of the Forces. He lived with his mistress, Julie St. Laurent, for many years before his marriage. Edward’s legacy is particularly felt in Canada, where he is known as the ‘Father of the Canadian Crown.’
