Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk, was born around 1330 and became an influential English financier and Lord Chancellor. He was the eldest son of Sir William de la Pole, a prominent wool merchant and financier to King Edward III. Michael's connections at court were strengthened by his marriage to Katherine Wingfield, whose father was a key administrator to the Black Prince.
Michael de la Pole gained favor with King Richard II, becoming one of his closest advisors and was appointed Chancellor in 1383. He was created Earl of Suffolk in 1385, marking the first time his family held such a title. However, his fortunes changed in the late 1380s when he was impeached for embezzlement during the Wonderful Parliament of 1386, though he remained in royal favor and was released from custody by the king.
Michael de la Pole fled to Paris after the Appellants' victory at Radcot Bridge in December 1387, avoiding the fate of others accused of treason. He died in France on 5 September 1389 at the age of 58 or 59. His title and estates were stripped, and his son, Michael de la Pole, succeeded him as the 2nd Earl of Suffolk.
