Maud of Lancaster, Countess of Ulster

Maud of Lancaster, Countess of Ulster, born circa 1310, was the daughter of Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster, and Maud Chaworth. Her siblings included Blanche, Baroness Wake of Liddell, Joan, Baroness Mowbray, Isabel of Lancaster, prioress of Amesbury, Eleanor, Countess of Arundel, Mary, Baroness Percy, and Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster. Maud’s mother passed away when she was twelve years old. In 1327, she married William Donn de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster, and they had a daughter, Elizabeth de Burgh, suo jure Countess of Ulster.

After the assassination of her first husband in 1333, Maud fled to England with her daughter. She married Sir Ralph de Ufford in 1343 and accompanied him to Ireland, where they had a daughter, Maud de Ufford, Countess of Oxford. Following Ufford’s death in 1346, Maud returned to England and became a canoness at Campsey Priory. Later, she transferred to Bruisyard Abbey, where she died on 5 May 1377.
