Matilda of Flanders

Matilda of Flanders was born around 1031 as the only daughter of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders, and Adela of France. Her lineage connected her to European nobility, with her mother being the daughter of Robert II of France. Matilda's marriage to William the Conqueror made her Queen of England and Duchess of Normandy. Her marriage was strategic, considering Flanders' importance as a trade hub and its role in regional politics.

As Duchess of Normandy, Matilda governed the duchy during William's absences, acting as regent multiple times to ensure stability in Normandy. Her governance included supporting her brother's interests in Flanders and sponsoring ecclesiastical establishments. Matilda outfitted a ship for William's invasion of England and delayed her visit to England until her coronation in 1068.

Matilda and William had at least nine children who survived to adulthood, including two future kings, William II and Henry I. Her children were educated, with her daughters learning Latin and her sons guided by Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury. Matilda mediated disputes, such as the truce between William and their son Robert.

Matilda fell ill in the summer of 1083 and died on 2 November 1083. She was buried at l'Abbaye aux Dames in Caen, Normandy. William continued to rule until his death in 1087.
