Matilda I, Countess of Boulogne

Matilda was born around 1105 and became the Countess of Boulogne in her own right from 1125. She later ascended to the role of Queen of England following her husband Stephen’s accession in 1135, a position she held until her death in 1152. Her tenure as queen was marked by her staunch support for Stephen during the English throne’s contested succession against Empress Matilda. Notably, Matilda demonstrated exceptional leadership by taking charge of military actions to secure Stephen’s release when he was captured, showcasing her capabilities beyond the traditional roles of women at the time.

Although the civil war, known as the Anarchy, ended with an agreement that precluded her children from inheriting the English throne, her lineage continued to hold influence in Boulogne, with her three surviving children—Eustace IV, William I, and Marie I—ruling consecutively. Matilda’s legacy extended to religious and charitable endeavors, as evidenced by her support of the Knights Templar and the founding of several religious institutions.
