Matilda I of Boulogne was Countess of Boulogne from 1125 and became Queen of England upon her husband Stephen's accession in 1135. She actively supported Stephen during his struggle for the English throne against their cousin, Empress Matilda. Her leadership was evident when she successfully negotiated Stephen's release after his capture, demonstrating her capability as a general.
Born in Boulogne, France, Matilda was the daughter of Count Eustace III of Boulogne and Mary of Scotland. Her marriage to Stephen of Blois in 1125 brought together significant territories in England and Boulogne. As queen, she founded several religious institutions and maintained a close relationship with the Holy Trinity Priory at Aldgate.
Matilda died of a fever on 3 May 1152 at Hedingham Castle in Essex and was buried at Faversham Abbey. Her children did not inherit the English throne, but her surviving sons and daughter ruled Boulogne in succession.
