Mary de Bohun

Mary de Bohun, born circa 1369/70, was the first wife of Henry Bolingbroke, who held the titles of Earl of Northampton and Hereford, and she was the mother of King Henry V. Although she was never queen, as she passed away before her husband ascended to the throne as Henry IV, she played a significant role in the lineage of English royalty.

Mary was the offspring of Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford, and Joan Fitzalan. She and her elder sister, Eleanor de Bohun, were co-heiresses to their father’s estate. Mary’s life was marked by a series of events that shaped the political landscape of the time, including being pressured into becoming a nun, her eventual rescue, and her marriage to Henry Bolingbroke. This union produced several children, including a future king and other nobles.
