Marie of France was a Capetian princess born in 1145 to Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII of France. Her birth was considered a miracle by Bernard of Clairvaux, and she was just two years old when her parents joined the Second Crusade. After her parents' marriage was annulled in 1152, Marie and her sister Alice remained with their father as heirs to the French throne.
In 1153, Marie was betrothed to Henry I of Champagne, and they married in 1159. She became Countess of Champagne and served as regent during her husband's absences and after his death in 1181. Marie was a patron of literature, influencing authors such as Chrétien de Troyes and Andreas Capellanus, and maintained an extensive library.
Marie died on 11 March 1198 and was buried in Meaux Cathedral. Her son Henry II succeeded her as Count of Champagne.
