Marie of France

Marie of France was born in 1145 as a Capetian princess and later became the Countess of Champagne through her marriage to Henry I of Champagne. She assumed the role of regent for the County of Champagne on three occasions: during her husband’s pilgrimage from 1179 to 1181, after his death for their son Henry II’s minority from 1181 to 1187, and while Henry II participated in the Third Crusade from 1190 to 1197. As a daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII of France, she had several notable siblings and half-siblings, including kings and queens of England and France.

Marie was recognized for her contributions to literature and served as a patron to many authors and poets, playing a pivotal role in the cultural life of her time. She was literate in both French and Latin and maintained an extensive personal library. Her influence extended beyond her regencies, as she helped transform Champagne into a significant principality. Marie passed away on 11 March 1198, shortly after learning of her son’s death, and was interred in Meaux Cathedral.
