Marie de Coucy was born around 1218, the daughter of Enguerrand III, Lord of Coucy, and Marie de Montmirail. She became Queen of Alba through her marriage to King Alexander II of Scotland on 15 May 1239. The marriage was part of an alliance between Scotland and France against England, and she brought a large French entourage to Scotland.
Marie gave birth to her son, Alexander III, two years after her marriage. Following the death of Alexander II in 1249, she ensured her young son was crowned promptly. Although she did not serve as regent, she was involved in the royal council during the last years of her son's minority from 1260 to 1262.
Marie de Coucy died in the summer of 1285 and was buried at Newbattle Abbey. Her son, Alexander III, succeeded her as the ruler of Scotland.
