Queen Margaret of Norway

Margaret of Scotland was born on 28 February 1261 at Windsor Castle. She was the firstborn child of King Alexander III of Scotland and Margaret of England. A committee of nobles ensured her safe passage to Scotland after her birth. She had two younger brothers, Alexander and David.

Margaret remained unmarried until she was 20, which was unusual for a medieval princess. In 1281, she was betrothed to Eric II, King of Norway, to ease tensions between Norway and Scotland. Her marriage was celebrated in Bergen, and she was crowned by the Archbishop of Nidaros. Margaret tried to influence her young husband by teaching him languages and manners.

Margaret of Scotland died on 9 April 1283 in Tønsberg, likely due to complications from childbirth, and was buried in Christ Church, Bergen. Her daughter, Margaret, known as the Maid of Norway, succeeded to the Scottish throne in 1286.
