Margaret Marshal, Duchess of Norfolk

Margaret of Norfolk, also known as Margaret of Brotherton and surnamed Margaret Marshal, was born circa 1322 and passed away on 24 March 1399. She was the daughter of Thomas of Brotherton and Alice de Hales, and the granddaughter of King Edward I and Margaret of France. Margaret became the Duchess of Norfolk in her own right and held the office of Earl Marshal, making her the only woman to have done so. She was married twice, first to John Segrave, 4th Baron Segrave, with whom she had four children, and later to Sir Walter Manny, 1st Baron Manny, with whom she had three children. Her life included an annulment plea to the Pope, clandestine travel to France, and subsequent remarriage without royal consent. She was buried in the choir of Grey Friars in the City of London.
