Margaret Landgravine of Thuringia

Balthasar, Landgrave of Thuringia, was a member of the House of Wettin and served as Margrave of Meissen and Landgrave of Thuringia. Born on December 21, 1336, in Weißenfels, he was the second son of Frederick the Serious. After his father’s death in 1349, Balthasar and his brothers were placed under the regency of their elder brother Frederick the Austere. Eventually, Balthasar co-ruled with his brothers William I and Frederick after coming of age.

Following Frederick the Austere’s death, Balthasar entered into a conflict with his nephews, which was settled by the Division of Chemnitz in November 1382, granting him the Landgraviate of Thuringia. Balthasar’s first marriage was to Margaret of Nuremberg in the spring of 1374, and they had two children. His second marriage to Anna of Saxe-Wittenberg remained childless.
