Margaret de Clare

Margaret de Clare was an English noblewoman and heiress. She was the second eldest daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford, and Joan of Acre, making her a granddaughter of King Edward I of England. Her first marriage was to Piers Gaveston, the favourite of her uncle Edward II, which resulted in the birth of her daughter, Joan Gaveston. Following Gaveston’s execution, she inherited Oakham Castle among other lands. Her second marriage was to Hugh de Audley, 1st Earl of Gloucester, with whom she had a daughter named Margaret Audley. She served as High Sheriff of Rutland from 1313 to 1319 and was one of the co-heiresses to the Gloucester estate after her brother’s death at the Battle of Bannockburn.
