Lord Guildford Dudley, son of the powerful Duke of Northumberland, became the husband of Lady Jane Grey in May 1553. The marriage was part of a political plan to secure the Protestant succession after King Edward VI’s impending death. Guildford supported Jane’s brief nine-day reign as queen, though he unsuccessfully sought to be named king. After Mary Tudor claimed the throne, Guildford was imprisoned in the Tower of London. He and Jane were both found guilty of high treason and were initially spared, but following Wyatt’s Rebellion in early 1554, Queen Mary I ordered their executions. Guildford was beheaded on Tower Hill on 12 February 1554.
