Leofwine Godwinson was a younger brother of King Harold Godwinson and the fifth son of Earl Godwin. In 1051, during the exile of the Godwin family from England, he accompanied his brother Harold to Ireland, where they were supported by Diarmait mac Máel na mBó, King of Leinster. After returning to England, Leofwine was appointed Earl of Kent, Essex, Middlesex, Hertford, Surrey, and probably Buckinghamshire between 1055 and 1057. This appointment, along with his brother Gyrth's control of East Anglia, Cambridgeshire, and Oxfordshire, allowed the Godwinsons to dominate East England.
Leofwine Godwinson died on 14 October 1066, killed alongside his brothers Harold and Gyrth at the Battle of Hastings. His death marked the end of his family's control over their territories.
