Leofric, who died on 31 August or 30 September 1057, was an Earl of Mercia, the son of Leofwine, Ealdorman of the Hwicce. He witnessed a charter in 997 for King Æthelred II. His brothers were Northman, Edwin, and Godwine. Leofric became a powerful earl under King Cnut and his successors, and was married to Lady Godiva. He founded monasteries at Coventry and Much Wenlock.
As Earl of Mercia, Leofric was a key figure in the court of King Cnut. He supported Harold Harefoot and later King Edward the Confessor against Earl Godwin. Leofric’s advice was pivotal in settling disputes via the Witenagemot rather than battle. His religious contributions included founding and endowing monasteries. His son, Ælfgar, succeeded him as earl.
Death: Leofric died in 1057 at his estate at Kings Bromley in Staffordshire and was buried in Coventry at St Mary's Priory and Cathedral.
