King Robert the Bruce of Scotland

Robert I, known as Robert the Bruce, was born on 11 July 1274. He became King of Scots in 1306 and led Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence against England. He fought to restore Scotland's independence, achieving military victories such as the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

Robert was a fourth-great-grandson of King David I and supported his family's claim to the Scottish throne. He was involved in the murder of John Comyn in 1306, which led to his excommunication, but he quickly seized the throne and was crowned king. Throughout his reign, he expanded his control over Scotland and secured recognition of his kingship from the Pope in 1324.

Robert I died on 7 June 1329 at the age of 54 and was buried in Dunfermline Abbey, with his heart interred in Melrose Abbey. He was succeeded by his son, David II.
