Robert I

Robert I, also known as Robert the Bruce, was King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. Born into a noble Scottish family with royal ancestry, Robert initially supported his family’s claim to the Scottish throne and participated in William Wallace’s resistance against English rule. He later served as a Guardian of Scotland but resigned due to conflicts with his rival John Comyn and shifting political alliances. After murdering Comyn in 1306, Robert was excommunicated but quickly moved to seize the throne and was crowned king. His early reign was marked by defeat at the Battle of Methven and a period of guerrilla warfare against England, during which he gained support and secured his kingdom.

Robert’s subsequent military campaigns were largely successful, culminating in the decisive victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, which established Scottish independence from England. He continued to strengthen his position through raids into England and Ireland and by securing diplomatic recognition of his kingship. Despite health issues later in life, Robert secured the future of his dynasty before his death. He was succeeded by his son David II, and his heart was buried in Melrose Abbey, as per his wishes.
