Robert II, known as the Pious or the Wise, was King of the Franks from 996 to 1031. He was crowned Junior King in 987 and assisted his father, Hugh Capet, in military matters, including the sieges of Laon. Educated by Gerbert of Aurillac, Robert became a key figure in religious matters, leading councils and maintaining alliances with Normandy and Anjou.
After becoming sole ruler in 996, Robert II sought to expand the royal domain, securing the Duchy of Burgundy in 1005. His reign involved political and familial conflicts, including tensions with his sons and marital issues, as he married three times with two annulments. He was known for his piety and acts of charity, earning a reputation as a miracle worker.
Robert II died on 20 July 1031 at the age of 58 or 59 and was buried at Saint Denis Basilica in Paris. He was succeeded by his son, Henry I.
