King Phillip III of France

Philip III, known as the Bold, was born on 1 May 1245 in Poissy. He was the second son of King Louis IX of France and Margaret of Provence. Initially not expected to rule, he became heir apparent after the death of his older brother Louis in 1260. Philip was married to Isabella of Aragon in 1262 and was knighted by his father in 1267.

Philip became King of France in 1270 following the death of his father during the Eighth Crusade. He was anointed king at Reims in 1271 and inherited numerous territories, including the County of Toulouse. His reign included the Treaty of Orléans, which expanded French influence into Navarre. Philip also led the Aragonese Crusade to support his uncle, Charles I of Naples.

During his reign, Philip maintained many of his father's policies, including those concerning the Jewish population in France. He enacted ordinances against seigneurial warfare and reinforced his father's policies on Jewish badges and synagogue construction. Philip's reign also included conflicts such as the War of the Sicilian Vespers, where he attempted to support his uncle's claim to Sicily.

Philip III died from dysentery in Perpignan on 5 October 1285 at the age of 40 and was initially buried in Narbonne before being moved to Saint Denis Basilica. He was succeeded by his son, Philip IV.
