King Philip I of France

Philip I, known as the Amorous, was King of the Franks from 1060 to 1108. Born around 1052 in Champagne-et-Fontaine, he was the son of Henry I and Anne of Kiev. His reign, lasting nearly 48 years, saw the addition of the Vexin region and the viscountcy of Bourges to his royal domain.

Philip was crowned as co-king in 1059 and began ruling in his own right after the death of his father in 1060. He faced revolts from his vassals and engaged in military campaigns, such as the invasion of Flanders in 1071 and the annexation of the Vexin in 1082. His personal life included marriages to Bertha of Holland and later to Bertrade de Montfort, leading to his excommunication by the Church.

Philip died at the age of 56 on 29 July 1108 in Melun and was buried at the monastery of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire. He was succeeded by his son, Louis VI, although the succession faced some contestation.
