King Louis X of France

Louis X, known as the Quarrelsome, was born on 4 October 1289 in Paris. He became King of Navarre in 1305 following the death of his mother, Joan I of Navarre. Louis married Margaret of Burgundy in 1305, and they had a daughter, Joan. He worked to emancipate serfs who could buy their freedom and readmitted Jews into the kingdom.

In 1314, Louis ascended to the French throne after the death of his father, Philip IV. His reign in France involved tensions with the nobility due to fiscal and centralization reforms initiated by his father. Louis' first wife, Margaret, was implicated in the Tour de Nesle affair, leading to her imprisonment and death in 1315. Louis remarried Clémence of Hungary shortly after Margaret's death.

Louis and Clémence were crowned in Reims in August 1315. Clémence was pregnant at the time of Louis' death in 1316, and she later gave birth to a son, John I, who lived only five days. Louis was interested in jeu de paume and constructed indoor tennis courts, a design that spread across Europe.

Louis X died on 5 June 1316 at the age of 26, possibly from pneumonia or pleurisy, and was buried at Saint Denis Basilica. His brother Philip became regent and later succeeded him as Philip V of France.
