James IV of Scotland

James IV of Scotland became king at the age of fifteen after his father, James III, died in battle. His reign saw the expansion of the Scottish royal navy, the introduction of the printing press to Scotland, and the founding of the University of Aberdeen and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He commissioned the building of the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Falkland Palace and passed an education act that made schooling compulsory. Under his rule, royal income doubled, and he exerted firm control over the Scottish church. His marriage to Margaret Tudor in 1503 eventually led to the Union of the Crowns in 1603. James IV was the last British monarch to die in battle, at Flodden, fighting against the English forces.
