Henry V

Henry V, also known as Henry of Monmouth, served as the King of England from 1413 until his death in 1422. His military successes in the Hundred Years’ War against France elevated England to a strong military power in Europe. Before becoming king, he fought in the Welsh revolt of Owain Glyndŵr and at the Battle of Shrewsbury against the Percy family. He played an increased role in government due to his father’s health issues, although this led to political disagreements between them.

Upon his father’s death, Henry V claimed the English throne and pursued the English claim to the French throne. His military campaign included the victory at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. By 1420, he had captured Paris and nearly conquered all of medieval France. The Treaty of Troyes in 1420 recognized him as the regent and heir apparent to the French throne, leading to his marriage to Catherine of Valois. His death in 1422, however, preceded the potential union of the English and French crowns. His reign was marked by personal piety, bravery, and military skill, and he played a significant role in fostering English nationalism during the Hundred Years’ War.
