King Henry II of England

Henry II was born on 5 March 1133 in Le Mans, Maine, as the eldest son of Geoffrey Plantagenet and Empress Matilda. By the age of fourteen, he was actively engaged in military and political maneuvers in support of his mother's claim to the English throne against Stephen of Blois. In 1150, Henry was made Duke of Normandy by his father, and upon Geoffrey's death in 1151, he inherited Anjou, Maine, and Touraine.

His marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152 expanded his control to include the Duchy of Aquitaine, increasing his power in France. Henry became King of England in 1154 following the Treaty of Wallingford, which stipulated that he would succeed Stephen. His reign focused on restoring the royal administration and reclaiming lands lost during Stephen's rule.

Henry sought to assert control over the English Church, leading to a prolonged conflict with Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Throughout his reign, Henry engaged in a struggle with Louis VII of France, expanding his territories at Louis's expense, including taking Brittany and extending his influence into central and southern France. Numerous peace attempts were made, but the conflict persisted.

Henry and Eleanor had eight children, three of whom became kings: Henry the Young King, Richard I, and John. As his sons matured, tensions arose over the inheritance of his empire, leading to several rebellions. The Great Revolt of 1173-1174 was suppressed through military action and strategic alliances.

In his later years, Henry faced renewed rebellion from his sons, encouraged by Philip II of France. In 1189, after being defeated by Philip and Richard, Henry retreated to Chinon Castle. He succumbed to a bleeding ulcer and died shortly after.

Henry II died on 6 July 1189 at the age of 56 at Chinon Castle and was buried at Fontevraud Abbey in Anjou. He was succeeded by his son Richard I.
