King Harold II Godwinson of England

Harold II, also known as Harold Godwinson, was the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king of England. He ascended the throne on 6 January 1066, following the death of his brother-in-law, King Edward the Confessor. Harold was chosen by the Witenagemot and was likely the first English monarch to be crowned in Westminster Abbey.

Born around 1020, Harold was the son of Godwin, Earl of Wessex, and Gytha Thorkelsdóttir. His family was one of the most powerful noble families in England, with his father having been made earl by King Cnut the Great. Harold initially served as Earl of East Anglia before succeeding his father as Earl of Wessex in 1053.

Harold's reign included military challenges, such as an invasion by Harald Hardrada of Norway. In September 1066, Harold successfully defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. This victory was short-lived as he soon faced another threat from William the Conqueror.

William, Duke of Normandy, claimed the English throne, alleging that Harold had broken an oath. In response, Harold prepared his forces to defend against the Norman invasion. The two armies met at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066.

Harold's forces were defeated at the Battle of Hastings after a day of intense fighting. Harold was killed in the battle, and his brothers Gyrth and Leofwine also lost their lives. This defeat marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule in England.

Harold was married to Edith the Fair in a more danico marriage and later to Ealdgyth of Mercia. He had several children, including Godwin, Edmund, Magnus, Gunhild, Gytha, Harold, and Ulf. The fate of his children after his death remains uncertain, with some sources suggesting they sought refuge in Denmark.

Harold II died on 14 October 1066 at the Battle of Hastings and was buried at Waltham Abbey or Bosham. He was succeeded by William the Conqueror, who became the new king of England.
