George IV

George IV, born George Augustus Frederick, was the eldest child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He became known for his extravagant lifestyle and patronage of the arts, contributing to the fashions of the Regency era. He commissioned notable architects such as John Nash and Jeffry Wyatville to work on the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, Buckingham Palace, and Windsor Castle. Despite his charm and cultural contributions, George IV’s dissolute lifestyle and troubled personal relationships, including those with his parents and his wife Caroline of Brunswick, led to a decrease in public regard for the monarchy. His political role was characterized by reliance on his ministers, and his reign included significant events such as the victory over Napoleon and the Catholic emancipation. George IV served as prince regent during his father’s illness before ascending the throne and his reign lasted from 29 January 1820 until his death in 1830.
