George II

George II, born George Augustus in northern Germany, was the King of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and a prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire from 11 June 1727 until his death in 1760. He married Princess Caroline of Ansbach in 1705 and had eight children. George II ascended the throne after the death of his father, George I, and had a notably difficult relationship with his eldest son, Frederick. He is the most recent British monarch to lead an army in battle, doing so at the Battle of Dettingen during the War of the Austrian Succession. The last of the Jacobite rebellions, an attempt to depose him, failed in 1745. Upon his death, he was succeeded by his grandson, George III.
