Edward VIII

Edward VIII, born Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, was King of the United Kingdom, the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December 1936. Before his accession, he was the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen Mary, and was created Prince of Wales at age 16. He served in the British Army during the First World War and undertook several overseas tours on behalf of his father. Known for his charm, charisma, and fashion sense, he gained popularity but also caused concern due to his sexual affairs.

His brief reign was marred by a constitutional crisis over his intention to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, which was opposed by the government and conflicted with his role as head of the Church of England. His abdication led to his brother George VI becoming king. Post-abdication, Edward was named Duke of Windsor, married Simpson, and his visit to Nazi Germany stirred controversy. During World War II, he served in France and was later appointed Governor of the Bahamas. He spent his later life in France with Simpson, passing away in 1972 without any children.
