Edward IV of England

Edward IV, born on 28 April 1442 in Rouen, Normandy, was the eldest surviving son of Richard, 3rd Duke of York, and Cecily Neville. Known as the Earl of March until his father's death, he became a central figure in the Wars of the Roses. He inherited the Yorkist claim and deposed King Henry VI after victories at Mortimer’s Cross and Towton, becoming King of England. His reign was marked by conflicts, notably with Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, and his own brother George, Duke of Clarence. After a brief exile, he reclaimed the throne in 1471 and maintained relative peace until his death in 1483.

Edward's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville resulted in discord with Warwick and a temporary reinstatement of Henry VI. Edward fled to Flanders, returning with support to win battles at Barnet and Tewkesbury. His reign saw the death of Henry VI in the Tower of London and challenges from Henry Tudor, the future Henry VII. Edward IV's sudden death led to the brief succession of his son Edward V, before his brother Richard III took the throne. His physical stature and presentation contrasted sharply with the frailties of Henry VI, with contemporaries noting his impressive appearance and attire.
