King Duncan I of Scotland

Duncan I, also known as Donnchad mac Crinain, was king of Scotland from 1034 to 1040. He was the son of Crínán of Dunkeld and Bethóc, daughter of King Malcolm II. Duncan succeeded his grandfather Malcolm II as king without apparent opposition, suggesting he may have been the acknowledged successor.

During his reign, Duncan's early years were reportedly uneventful, possibly due to his youth. He led a large Scots army south to besiege Durham in 1039, but the expedition ended in failure. The following year, he led an army north into Moray, where he was killed in battle by Macbeth's forces.

Duncan died at the age of around 38 at Pitgaveny, near Elgin, and was initially buried at Elgin before being relocated to Iona. He was succeeded by Macbeth, who took the throne after Duncan's death.
